RelayRides blogger and ski fanatic, Eric Rosenberg, has tips to get to some of Colorado’s top ski destinations on the cheap from Denver International Airport.
Looking for a great ski trip? There is no place better than the Colorado Rocky Mountains. With world class ski destinations, luxury resorts, and beautiful scenery, the only thing that is missing is you, and a luxury ride to get there. Here are our recommendations for places to ski and the cars to get you there from Denver airport.
Distance from Denver International Airport: 221 miles
Want to spend your winter holiday among the rich and famous? Join the company of business executives, Hollywood elite, and European vacationers in this world famous ski resort town.
Aspen is host to the ESPN X-Games every year, and you can ski and ride the same slopes as your favorite winter athletes at the Aspen-Snowmass resort.
When you’re away from the mountain, enjoy excellent cuisine and attractions around town. If you’re looking to explore a little off the beaten path, be sure to enjoy a meal in downtown Carbondale or visit the hot springs pool at Glenwood Springs less than an hour away.
How to get there: So, you’re heading to Aspen? You going to want to travel in-style from Denver Int. Airport, which is why The Ultimate Driving Machine is the best choice for you. It’s a great BMW 5 Series and getting it from the airport is simple.
Distance from Denver International Airport: 120 miles
If you are looking for great service and a massive ski resort, take your next mountain getaway in Vail. With over 5,000 acres of skiable terrain, Vail is the second largest ski resort in the United States. Enjoy challenging back bowl terrain or glide down the front side of the mountain on a variety of beginner and intermediate terrain. You have seven bowls to choose from and countless combinations of paths down the mountain.
When you’re not skiing, be sure to walk around the Swiss inspired village and dine at one of the town’s fine French and Italian bistros.
How to get there: you want something that will get you from the airport to Vail in comfort and class. That is why Mark’s Toyota 4Runner Sport is a great choice.
Distance from Denver International Airport: 89 miles
Want to avoid the glitz and cost of Aspen and Vail? Go where the locals go and spend your holiday in Winter Park. Winter Park resort is owned by the City of Denver and has lower lift ticket prices than some competing mountains.
Just because it is cheaper doesn’t mean the mountain is not quality. Enjoy a wide array of terrain on the front side of the mountain for any difficulty level. I prefer the back side, known as Mary Jane, with mostly intermediate runs.
When away from the mountain, try a fun evening on the tubing hill or find your way to the local ice rink.
How to get there: You have to rent Mary’s Subaru Outback…it is the perfect car for a ski trip and great if you are coming from the airport. With a car like that, you shouldn’t need to worry about installing snow chains.
Distance from Denver International Airport: 104 miles
If you are looking for an “in between” option for your trip, looking to avoid the high prices of Vail and Aspen while still enjoying a luxury vacation, look no further than Breckenridge. Fondly known by locals as “Breck,” this is one of the first places I ever skied as a child growing up in Colorado.
Both a summer and winter destination, Breck has great skiing and a wonderful town below. To stay nearby on a budget, check out the quaint town Frisco adjacent to the scenic Lake Dillon just a few miles away.
How to get there: Dan’s Audi is the way to go if you want something sporty and stylish to get you from Denver International Airport to Breck.
Distance from Denver International Airport: 129 miles
Luxury without pretention. That is how I think of my trips to Beaver Creek. Owned by Vail Resorts, Beaver Creek is a place to get celebrity quality service with a more private atmosphere.
Just because Beaver Creek doesn’t make the news as often as Aspen doesn’t mean it is lacking in quality. That is by design. Enjoy luxury in a friendly atmosphere at the Beaver Creek resort.
How to get there: Craig’s Subaru Forester is the right choice if you want the perfect combination of affordability and utility.
